Holly Lucas

Holly is a Brighton-based, self-taught artist whose practice explores abstraction through layered surfaces, texture, and intuitive mark-making. Her paintings evolve through a process of accumulation, with each layer contributing to the depth and tactile character of the composition.

Working with unconventional tools such as sticks and household objects, Holly creates expressive marks that further accentuate the physical qualities of the painted surface. This experimental approach allows texture, gesture, and material to become integral elements within her visual language.

Inspired by the landscapes and atmospheric conditions of the Sussex coast, her work reflects a close connection to the natural environment. In Stormy, Holly draws specifically from the wild, wintry weather of the South Downs, translating its shifting energy and atmosphere into an abstract composition.
