Michelle Cox-Hurrell

Dr. Michelle Cox-Hurrell is a visual artist whose practice is guided by a lifelong fascination with light, color, and the power of curiosity. Growing up in Australia during the vibrant cultural landscape of the 1970s, she was influenced by an environment rich in visual energy, creativity, and optimism. Early encouragement from dedicated art teachers fostered her imagination and laid the foundation for a sustained engagement with artistic expression.

Painting occupies a central place within her practice, serving as both a creative outlet and a means of exploration. Currently working with gouache, Cox-Hurrell is drawn to the medium’s velvety opacity, immediacy, and capacity for expressive mark-making. Her approach embraces experimentation and responsiveness, allowing mood and intuition to shape the development of each work.

Through expressive brushwork and a sensitive use of color, she seeks to create immersive visual experiences that invite viewers into the atmosphere of the painting. Rather than simply depicting a scene, her work aims to evoke a sense of presence and connection, encouraging the viewer to experience the image as though they have stepped directly into its world.
