Roma Finlinson

Roma Finlinson’s practice investigates painting through processes of chemical transformation, positioning the studio as a site of experimentation and material inquiry. Working with reactive substances including salts, acids, minerals, and pigments, she creates compositions in which color and texture emerge through dynamic interactions, revealing processes that are typically hidden from view.

Each work is approached as what the artist describes as a “meta-image of nothing,” where the painted surface functions not as a site of representation but as an active field of reaction and change. Through the careful manipulation of variables such as layering, concentration, and exposure, Finlinson initiates processes that evolve independently, allowing material behavior to play a central role in the development of the work.

Time is an essential component of her practice. As reactions unfold at their own pace, the artist assumes the role of both observer and participant, responding to transformations as they occur. The resulting paintings serve as records of these material events, reflecting a dialogue between intention and unpredictability. Through this collaborative relationship with matter, Finlinson’s work invites viewers to consider the invisible forces that shape both the physical world and our perception of it.
