Sumiko Tanaka

Sumiko Tanaka is a Japanese artist whose creative practice reflects a lifelong engagement with craftsmanship, material exploration, and artistic expression. She graduated in 1967 from the Department of Oil Painting at Musashino Junior College of Art, establishing an early foundation in the visual arts.

Over the course of her career, Tanaka has continued to expand her artistic knowledge through diverse disciplines and techniques. In 1986, she became an antique doll instructor at Wakayama Kintetsu, further developing her understanding of form, detail, and traditional craftsmanship.

In 2012, Tanaka began exploring wood carving, embracing the expressive possibilities of working directly with natural materials. More recently, in 2023, she expanded her practice into chainsaw art, bringing a dynamic and sculptural dimension to her work. This progression reflects her enduring commitment to learning new techniques and engaging with the transformative potential of artistic making.

Through decades of creative exploration, Tanaka has cultivated a practice that bridges traditional skills and contemporary approaches, demonstrating a sustained dedication to artistic growth and material expression.
